Last Thursday, I
visited the Miami History Museum in downtown Miami. At beginning the guide
started to talk about Paleo-Indians in Florida, how they lived on the Everglades
and their customs. Also, she explained what fossils are, she said fossils are
remains of bones from animals or people who died in some period.
Then, we moved to
Florida’s Indians exhibition. They established in the South of Florida,
specifically at the everglades zone, their customs and how they lived. During this
period (1500s) the Spanish arrived to their land and occupied it. Then the
French tried to establish in Florida but they couldn’t, they only stayed few
years. With Spanish and French came slaves from Africa and were used to do hard
work. Later, the Spanish returned and built a fort or castle in St. Augustine.
This castle was built using Coquina, kind of rock very resistant to the attack
from foreign pirates.
The Spanish
started to trade with other countries and exchange sponge and other goods from
South Florida and rum from the Caribbean. At the middle from 1800s this land
began to be populated by people from the North of United States who were running
away from many things, such as; the war, the weather, etc...
Mr. Flagler, a
wealthy man from New York City, started to build the rail system around the
east coast from United Stated (New York City to the north of Florida) and all
trades were improved. But during this time a hard frost destroyed all orange
planting in Florida, it was a million dollar loss. But in this moment, another
wealthy woman established in Florida called Mrs. Tuttle, offered him land at
the south of Florida in exchange of extended the rail system. That´s how
Florida started to grow up and today is a big state.
After the History
of Florida, we moved to a little exhibition of the aviation system in the
Florida. One of the most important airlines in the last century in United
States, it explained their operation and how they had made history during this
operation.
